Support for tape backup devices will be removed in a future version of SQL Server

In Microsoft Official MSDN Library, they announced that, the support for tape backup devices will be removed in a future version of SQL Server.
Avoid using this feature in new development work, and plan to modify applications that currently use this feature.

Therefore, it is generally considered better practice to write a backup to disk first, and to later copy the disk backup to tape if required.

The backups that SQL Server creates are encoded in a format known as Microsoft Tape Format (MTF) which is a common format that is used by other Microsoft products in addition to SQL Server. This means that SQL Server backups can be combined with other backups, such as operating system backups, on the same media sets.

The current supported version for these discontinued tape backup devices is SQL Server 2012.
